Jeff had confidence in his idea, but at the same time he was also aware that if this idea did not stick, it could be a terrible failure. Now lets navigate through this how his scout mindset helped him out. When Bezos conceived the idea of Amazon with the internet booming few decades back, he was assured that his idea could either strike a deal or could be a failure. Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder is one of them who embodies this scout mindset very well. Julia also states couple of fascinating examples of the recent leaders through this book which affirms the scout mindset and how this mindset lead to where they are today. Not every choice or action has to be rational, it might have an emotional aspect to it which you may not be looking at. The actions that people tend to take or the choices they make are purely coming out as to the way that person is. Overall, scout mindset helps us to grow as a better person as with this you know that every person on this earth is different, they have diverse intentions and goals to achieve in their life. The mindset and attitude of people towards any situation matters a lot. The later behavior would have made such a difference and the old lady would have happily gone back to help her son out. Imagine if the banker was a person with a scout mindset? Instead of getting exasperated by her questions, he would have calmly answered her questions, empathetically enquired about the situation in order to help her out in a better way. The old lady did her best at that moment of going to the bank to fetch money but others perceived her as moron for her silly questions. The banker later was at compunction after realizing the reality. She gave an example of an old lady at the bank who got grumpy at the banker as he got a little irate with her nagging questions, but he realized it later the reason for those questions was that the old lady’s son was in jail for some offense and she was trying to fetch money from the bank to help her son out. Her husband was baffled initially listening this question, but after putting deep thought over it, the answer is yes, people always do their best at any instance of time. ![]() Brene Brown in her “ Rising Strong” book asks her husband a very interesting question - “ Do people always perform their best at what they are doing?”. Along with an open mindset, emotional skills like empathy, inquisitiveness, trying to understand why others react/respond in a certain way, analyzing and understanding the patterns of their behavior, the background that they come from etc. Through this book, Julia shows that what makes scouts better at getting things right isn't that they are more smarter or more knowledgeable than others, but its just handful of emotional skills, habits and ways at looking at the world which anyone can learn. ![]() For things which we strongly believe in, we naturally tend to defend it, and when we do not want to listen to any conflicting views/opinions of others, its imbibing a “ soldier” mindset From tribalism and wishful thinking, to rationalizing in our personal lives and everything in between, we are driven to defend the ideas we most want to believe and shoot down those we don’t.īut if we want to get things right, then we should imbibe the “ scout” mindset, which is keeping an open mind, embody empathy, trying falling in confusion, precarious situations to better understand the plot of the territory. They do not want to believe in things they cannot see or visualize. People believe in things as to what they see and perceive. The scout mindset is an open and growth mindset which does not lean into knee jerk biases, helps in making better and right decisions wherever you apply it.
